The frontispiece of 1. volume of Diderot's og d’Alembert's "Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers", 1772-. It was drawn by Charles-Nicolas Cochin (1715–1790), French engraver, designer, writer, and art critic, and engraved by Benoît-Louis Prévost (1735/1747–1804) was a French engraver. The work is laden with symbolism: The figure in the centre represents truth—surrounded by bright light (the central symbol of the Enlightenment). Two other figures on the right, reason and philosophy, are tearing the veil from truth. Collection: Teylers museum, Haarlem, Holland. Photo: taken 21 January 2012 by AlfvanBeem. Public Domain.
