The Haymarket Martyrs

1886kvindebladet.jpg

The Haymarket Martyrs. This image has faded a great deal over time, but the type face can still be read through close inspection. The type lists each man and a respective quote, several of which were their final words quoted at their execution.
Adolf Fisher, “This is the happiest moment of my life.”
August Spies, “There will be a time when our silence will be more powerful than the voices you strangle today.”
Albert R. Parsons, “Let the Voice of the People Be Heard!”
Louis Lingg, “I am an Anarchist.”
George Engel, “”Hurrah For Anarchy!”

The central type reads:
“MARTYRS For Liberty’s Cause Nov. 11, 1887”

The lowest type is a quote from Proudhon:
“For always in thine eyes, O liberty! Shines that high light, whereby the world is saved;
And though thou slay us, we will trust in thee.”
