Banner of the debate society “Karl Marx” founded in 1886 to promote study of socialist theory and to educate agitators and speakers inside the labour movement, with the slogan: Kundskab er magt (Knowledge is power). They organised readings of Marx’ writings in Denmark (i.e. Copenhagen) and that got thereby more organised. In the 1880’s it was mainly younger and not so moderate workers, who were active in the society, and the society became the meeting point of the party’s left wing opposition. The peak of the society was 1886 – 1911, in this period 737 speeches/lectures were delivered (roughly weekly!). The society stopped in 1952.
