Den irske skribent, samfundssatiriker m.m. Jonathan Swift fødes i Dublin.

Gullivers rejser (Klim, 2017, 383 sider). I fire dele’.

Politlitics vs. Literature: an examination of Gulliver’s Travels. By George Orwell (Polemic, No.5, September/October 1946; online at Orwell.ru). “Swift did not possess ordinary wisdom, but he did possess a terrible intensity of vision, capable of picking out a single hidden truth and then magnifying it and distorting it.”

Jonathan Swift and A Tale of a Tub. By Anatoly Lunacharsky (On Literature and Art, 1930; online at Marxists Internet Archive). “This is what Swift wrote about himself: ‘I do not wish to entertain, but to irritate and insult people’.”

The political economy of Swift’s satires and other prose works. By Renee Prendergast  (Oeconomia, Vol.4, No.2, 2014, p.593-619). “Jonathan Swift wrote perceptively about the emerging commercial society in Britain in the early eighteenth century. His particular  focus was on the financial revolution and its implications for economic and political stability as well as for shifts of power between the landed and commercial classes…”

Utopias, past and present:why Thomas More remains astonishingly radical. By Terry Eagleton (The Guardian, 16 October 2015).
With critic of other utopians, such as Jonathan Swift, Daniel Defoe + Charles Fourier.
“… Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels is one (..) rightwing polemic. Tories like Swift, who regard human beings as feeble and corrupt, fear that nothing but chaos and confusion can result from the grandiose schemes of the progressivists. If men and women are encouraged to hope unrealistically, they can only end up damaged and disenchanted… alien creatures from distant lands are shown to be depressingly like ourselves. The natives of Lilliput are petty, vicious, quarrelsome and sectarian. When the hero finally encounters a race of noble-minded creatures, they turn out to be horses.”
