Den franske Jeanne d’Arc fødes i Domremy i Lorraine i Frankrig (henrettes på bålet i Rouen 31. maj 1431) efter at have modtaget religiøse syner. Hun ville befri folket for fremmed (engelsk) besættelse og krone en fransk konge, og hun henrettes som kætter.

Som fransk befrielsesheltinde et symbol for chauvinisme, for højrefløjen og også for kommunisterne under folkefronten i 30’erne og den tyske besættelse.
