Havopmålingsskibet HMS Beagle sejler ud fra Plymouth på en næsten 5-års tur til bl.a. Patagonien. Om bord var naturvidenskabsmanden Charles Darwin, der skulle studere planter og dyr. Hjemkomst til England 2. oktober 1836.
25. november 1859 publicerer han resultatet, bogen Om Arternes Oprindelse.
