September 1845

Første beretning om kartoffelpesten på Irland, som gennem flere år var direkte årsag til den store hungerskatatrofe (“An Gorta Mór” = Den Store Sult), da kartoflen var den irske befolknings afgrøde og kost, og andre afgrøder + kødkvæg kom fra engelske jordejere, som eksporterede afgrøder.
Hungersnøden kostede ca. 1 mio. liv (12% af befolkningen), og førte direkte til udvandring af ca. 2 mio. til USA.
